What Do They Do

Plumbers are responsible for the installation of systems in kitchens, bathrooms, lavatories etc. in residential, commercial and industrial buildings. They measure, cut, thread, bend, install, test and repair pipes, fittings and fixtures. Work is done according to plumbing codes, blueprints, specifications and working draw

Working Conditions

Plumbers move onto the project at the start. The work is active and strenuous. There is a great deal of walking, standing, reaching, lifting and working in cramped quarters and uncomfortable positions.  Plumbers must climb ladders and often work below ground level. The work at times can be dirty, particularly on waste systems.

Interest and Temperament

Plumbers need to possess good math skills and be able to work from drawings and specifications. Plumbers often work alone and occasionally in groups.

General Qualifications

The minimum age is 18. The Applicant should have a mechanical aptitude plus strength and manual dexterity.  A High School Diploma or GED Certificate is required; a written standardized test is taken.

Educational Background Recommended  

Reading, General Science, Math, Geometry, Other courses covering welding, metal shop, drafting and blue print reading are very helpful.

Admission requirements

Copies of Birth Certificate, Drivers License, Social Security Card, High School Transcript or GED are required.

Terms of Apprenticeship Training  (Building Trades Plumber)

5 year Apprenticeship, 1 year probationary period

260 hours of classroom instruction, 2000 hours of on the job training per year.
